Protecting the Western Antarctic Peninsula đSouth Shetland Islands
Since the ban of commercial whaling in the Southern Ocean in 1986, little data exist on the current status of the cetacean population. The expensive cost of surveys and extreme weather conditions make research in Antarctic waters difficult. đđđ
In 2019, Whale and Dolphin Conservation, supported by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, sent 5 researchers to the South Shetland Islands to conduct a 20-day cetacean visual and acoustic survey.
This study aims to develop pioneering acoustic research methods, to correlate the presence of cetaceans with the evolution of environmental conditions and finally, to establish a diagnosis of new threats to these species.
