It took more than ten years for Andromède Océanologie to map the French Mediterranean. However, some areas were still not covered due to the presence of large vessels preventing the passage of side sonar. With the cessation of human activities during the confinement, these underwater maps were refined.

Il aura fallu plus de dix ans à Andromède Océanologie pour cartographier la Méditerranée française. Malgré tout, certaines zones n’étaient toujours pas couvertes à cause de la présence de grands navires qui empêchaient le passage du sonar latéral. Avec l’arrêt des activités humaines durant le confinement, ces cartes sous-marines ont pu être affinées.

The year 2020 is special: the Covid-19 crisis generated a two-month confinement period in the spring, which led to a halt in human activities. Consequently, the intuitions of a return of a more abundant biodiversity near the coasts are felt. Laurent Ballesta and the Andromède Océanologie team then decided to measure the potential impact of the cessation of human activities on underwater biodiversity. This mission started very early at the beginning of confinement and lasted until the end of the summer. The Andromède Océanologie team used innovative techniques such as environmental DNA and bioacoustics to obtain indicators whose values can be compared to those collected during previous missions.

L’année 2020 est particulière : la crise de Covid-19 a engendré au printemps une période de confinement de deux mois, ce qui a conduit à un arrêt des activités humaines. Dès lors, les intuitions d’un retour d’une biodiversité plus abondante près des côtes se font ressentir. Laurent Ballesta et l’équipe d’Andromède Océanologie ont alors décidé de mesurer l’impact potentiel de l’arrêt des activités humaines sur la biodiversité sous-marine. Cette mission, commencée très tôt au début du confinement, s’est étalée jusqu’à la fin de l’été. L’équipe d’Andromède Océanologie a eu recours à des techniques innovantes telles que l’ADN environnemental et bioacoustique, afin d’obtenir des indicateurs dont les valeurs pourront être comparées à celles récoltées lors de missions précédentes.
