Safe Greece with the Greek Lifesaving Sports Association

Since 2014, the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation has been supporting the “Safe Greece” project in Greece, initiated by the Greek Government due to high rates of drowning in the country.

The lessons, prepared and taught by Dr Stathis Avramidis (International Swimming Hall of Fame honoree, lifesaving teacher at Athens University and an officer of the National Public Health Organisation), give children and adults the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the risks and to develop good safety habits in a water environment.

In 2020, the Greek Lifesaving Sports Association (GLSA) took over the project. The GLSA, presided over by Dr Avramidis, is a new entity whose purpose is to promote water safety and lifesaving sport throughout the country. In its first 2 years of existence, the association obtained outstanding results – testimony to the passion and determination of its managers, highlighting the importance of water sports and offering hope for the future of lifesaving in the country.

Emirates Dubai 7s 2021 – The Journey

In 2017, H.S.H. Princess Charlene of Monaco and Mr. Gareth Wittstock created the Impi’s rugby 7s team for the Dubai 7s tournament. The team lines up professional and amateur players to represent the Monaco Rugby Federation and the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation.

The Emirates Dubai 7s has been one of the most prestigious stages of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series since its inception in 1999 and is the only tournament to host the Men & Women’s series every year. The 2021 edition took place in Dubai on December 2-4.

This year, the Impi’s were promoted to the “International Invitation” category following strong results and a women’s rugby 7s team, the Umusa (meaning « graceful » in Zulu), was created to participate in the tournament in the “International Open” category.

For the first time, both men’s and women’s teams held high the colors of the Principality and of the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, proudly highlighting their identity and showcasing the values of solidarity, sportsmanship, and inclusivity.

This exceptional human and cultural adventure is a fantastic opportunity to train Monegasque players along with teammates and opponents of an international level.

Congratulations to all the players who showed determination and courage throughout the competition and during the tournament’s preparation.

Swimming and Respect for Nature in Patagonia

Initiated by the Association Monaco Argentina (AMA) and the Fundación Protejamos Patagonia (FPP), the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation supported a new Learn to Swim project on the Valdés Peninsula in Patagonia (Argentina).

Listed since 1999 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Valdés Peninsula is a unique coastal site for biodiversity and home to many marine mammals (whales, elephants and South Sea lions, orcas…).

The AMA and the FPP have been working together since 2018 to safeguard this region, educating the local population about its riches and dangers, promoting research, supporting economic activity, organizing citizen clean-up actions, and participating in discussions on tourism and sustainable development of the region.

In the port village of Puerto Pirámides (the only human settlement of the peninsula), the inhabitants have no real affinity with the sea and water activities. But this affinity is important for strengthening the knowledge of their environment and for raising their awareness of the local biodiversity.

The project, which took place in December 2021, allowed children of the village to discover swimming along with the exceptional environment that surrounds them.

53 children from 3 to 14 years old learned the basics of swimming, learned the dangers of water and how to protect themselves, and opened their eyes to the beauty of the Valdés Peninsula and the need to protect its biodiversity.

Thus, bases are laid in the region for the sustainable development of new aquatic and maritime activities in a safe way.
